Iceberg Lager Beer – Why oh why do I drink beer made in Thailand?

Brewed and canned for World & Tobacco PTE Singapore, but actually made in Thailand by San Miguel (formally Thai Amarit), Iceberg Lager Beer has recently made its debut.

The can offers the usual boast of “Premium Quality” and notes an alcohol content of 5.2% but gives few other details about the beer.

My first instinct upon closer inspection was that it was yet another brew by numbers, with quality and taste coming second to market price and positioning.

The taste, smell and churning in my stomach confirmed my instinct to be correct within half a sip. I braved about a quarter of a can before giving up and cracking open an ice cold bottle of Beerlao to take away the foul taste in my mouth.

I am sure that most Thai breweries simply churn out these production jobs with exactly the same chemi-beers each time, only stopping to change the name and can from time to time.

greetings asian beer connoisseur
i just about read your whole blog in a day and left afew silly comments.
happy sunny/monsoon rainy holidays to you.
im a 23 year old chang loving, tiger chugging thsi-chinese girl who lives in... YEAH singapore! i totally agree with your singapore supermarket post. in the likes of carrefour you can find leffe or erdinger beers for half the price you pay at bars.
i love my japanese beers too.
im biased so ill stick to my thai beers with thai food - it balances the taste. ice helps too in my opinion.
but to each his/her own yes mate? its my asian palate i guess.

please do included indonesian beers (as an afterthought after the balihai post). try some bintang beer. pretty good.

and as a previous person commented, korean beers (well i have tasted only 2 so far - hite and OB).. well they suck. they taste like water. total wasted money. do write something on that

ps chang light and singha light is a joke. i read some article where the writer sarcastically offered to sell these light crap as well - by drinking up a third of the original, adding water to it, serving it and charging 30% more. genius innit!

love your beerblog!
beer prices in singapore are insane - you buy a heineken for $3+++ from a supermarket, a big bottle (2 1/2 glasses) for $6-7 at a hawker shop, and $12 a glass/bottle at a bar. you have gotta be kidding me.
and yes brewerks is expensive. next time visit paulahners or archipelago

:)

Gotta say, .franz, I thought the Paulaner house in Singapore sucked. Brewerkz is a real gem however: a world class brewpub.
